Creating a secondary income stream could be one of the most important steps you take in your financial life. A second income stream provides diversification, it provides additional capital to invest or save, and it might provide a real business that can ultimately turn into a full time income. There is no downside to a second income stream.
What Is Needed
There are two things that are needed in order to successfully create a second income stream:
- A marketable skill or needed skill
- Determination / hard work
Selling A Skill
First, you need a skill. Take a look at what you do for your main income first. Do you have a job that might help you create a secondary consulting job or do some outside related work? Of course, you need to make sure you won’t be compromising your main income by doing so.
Perhaps, consider some of the skills you have around the house such as fixing your air conditioner or detailing your automobiles. The most important thing is to think about what would people actually pay for? Furthermore, what would they pay for in a struggling economy when they will likely be tight on cash and doing more things themselves. If you can find something that they will pay for in such a scenario, you should be good to go.
Determination Required
Creating a second income stream is hard, because you’re likely already working 40+ hours a week on your main career/income. It is important to keep your main income as your first priority. You cannot sacrifice it. As such, the second income stream will require significant effort and determination in addition to all of the effort you’re already putting forth in your main job. Add in family, social time, hobbies and you’re plate is likely already full.
I strongly believe that almost anyone can successfully create a second income stream, but hardly anyone will because of this very factor. It is hard to find the time and energy to get this going. It’s very do-able, but you will need some serious will power. If you’re married and/or have a family, make sure that your family is on board with you as this can easily become a source of tension if you have different priorities. Rather than being a source of tension, if your wife or husband is on board, they can become a source of encouragement which will be very helpful.
Online Income
If you tend to be more technological in nature versus a handy man, you might consider the online world of making money. While there are countless “how to make money online” websites on the internet, I can confirm to you that it is very possible to make money online. The best reason to do so is that it requires almost no money and there is no risk to getting started.
The easiest and the hardest way to make money online is with a blog. I say that because if you’re an expert in a certain area or have a unique angle on something, you can probably easily start a blog and generate revenue from it. If you struggle to differentiate yourself from the masses, then you probably won’t make enough money to justify the effort.
Lastly, earning money online is not easy. It does require significant work and continuous effort. Only if you grow a website to a certain level that most fail to obtain will you have the opportunity to generate more “passive” income.
